Naturespace’s December Project: 500 Native Hedgerows for Biodiversity

At Naturespace, “Do the Right Thing” is more than a simple phrase; it is a core value that influences every contract we manage and every green space we maintain. In December 2025, our nationwide franchise network brought this principle to life by coming together for a landmark environmental initiative. For the first time, our central team and franchise owners worked side by side on a community project at a residential site managed by our valued partners at Trustgreen.

This collaborative effort represented the first project delivered as part of Naturespace’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategies. As part of the initiative, Naturespace donated and planted 500 native hedgerow whips, complete with supporting canes and biodegradable guards to ensure the planting was both environmentally responsible and sustainable. Despite challenging winter weather, the team worked together to deliver a project that will benefit the local environment for many years to come.

The Importance of Native Hedgerows in Modern Developments

Hedgerows are a defining feature of the British countryside, yet over 100,000 miles have been lost over the past century. Reintroducing native hedgerows plays a critical role in restoring biodiversity and creating healthier ecosystems within modern developments. By planting 500 native hedgerow whips, Naturespace is actively helping to rebuild vital habitats that support wildlife and strengthen the ecological value of managed green spaces.

Native species such as Hawthorn and Blackthorn create natural corridors that allow wildlife to move safely between habitats. These corridors are essential for birds, small mammals and pollinators, supporting more than 2,000 species across the UK. In addition to supporting wildlife, hedgerows also provide measurable environmental benefits. Mature hedges act as natural carbon sinks, helping to capture and store carbon, while their deep root systems assist with flood mitigation by regulating water runoff and stabilising soil.

These environmental benefits also contribute to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) objectives, ensuring that new developments enhance the natural environment rather than detract from it. Initiatives such as this planting project demonstrate how sustainable grounds management can deliver long-term environmental value alongside well-maintained outdoor spaces.

We also help clients meet regulatory and environmental requirements through services such as play area inspections and the management of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), helping to maintain water quality and site safety. Every project we undertake is delivered to the highest professional standards and is supported by our SafeContractor accreditation.

Strengthening Our Franchise Network

Following a productive day of planting in the December rain, the Naturespace team gathered at Rutland Hall Hotel & Spa. This provided an opportunity for franchise partners from across the country to take part in the first national peer-to-peer knowledge sharing session within the network.

These sessions allow franchise owners to exchange expertise, discuss best practices and collaborate on ways to continue improving the quality and sustainability of the services we provide. By sharing experience and knowledge across the network, we ensure that every Naturespace client benefits from consistent, high-quality grounds maintenance delivered by professionals who are passionate about sustainable land management.

The day concluded with the network’s first national Christmas celebration, marking a successful year for Naturespace and highlighting the strength and collaboration that defines our growing franchise community.
